How do the levels work in skating?

Well, you'd best consult with the Skate Canada Web site or some other similar authority for the details.

Here's about all I know. This only applies to Canada as far as I know.

There are two categories of competitions. StarSkate and Competitive (or something to that effect). StarSkater is like the recreational league of figure skating. Competitive is the track for heading off to national and international competitions.

This has changed a bit in the last few years in Canada.

There are Star 1 to 10 categories which 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. There is also still a Gold category above Star 10.

Now, here's where it gets really confusing for the competitive levels.

  • Pre-Juvenile
  • Juvenile
  • Pre-novice
  • Novice
  • Junior
  • Senior

And yes, I think that if they had tried, they could have come up with some more terms that are synonymous with "being young" or "just starting" to make it a little more confusing.
